At a local animal shelter, there are 23 animals being cared for. If 15 of the animals are brown, 5 are brown cats, and 7 of the animals are neither brown nor cats, how many cats must be in the animal shelter?
(A) 1
(B) 4
(C) 5
(D) 6
(E) 8

I don't know what to say, really. Three minutes to the biggest battle of our professional lives. You find out life's this game of inches, so is football. Because in either game - life or football - the margin for error is so small. I mean, one half a step too late or too early and you don't quite make it. One half second too slow, too fast and you don't quite catch it. I'll tell you this, in any fight it's the guy whose willing to die whose gonna win that inch. That's football guys, that's all it is. Now, what are you gonna do?

1. There are 15 brown animals in total
2. 5 are cats, hence 10 are not cats
3. There 7 animals neither cats nor brown.
4. Adding 10 to 7, there are 17 animals that are not cats.
5. So 23-17, 6 cats

Using a basic grid lay out, the number of total cats at the shelter is 6. Here are the steps I took:
1. There are 15 brown animals; therefore there are 8 animals that are not brown
2. 5 of the animals are brown and cats; so there has to be 10 animals that are brown that are not cats
3. If 7 are neither brown nor a cat then there are 17 non-cats at the shelter (10+7)
4. if there are 17 non-cats then there has to be 6 total cats at the shelter (23-17)

Sorry if my explanatIon is not concise, and I apologize for not uploading a diagram. I am somewhat new to the community
