The sentence is giving a comparison between the number of people killed in Maryland to those later killed at Normandy.

Option A - Correct
It uses the correct idiom for the comparison in the sentence.

Option B - Incorrect
It makes the comparison look illogical because of the incorrect idiomatic structure.

Option C - Incorrect
It makes use of incorrect idiomatic structure. It doesn't compare correctly in the passage.

Option D - Incorrect
It makes the sentence look redundant.

Option E - Incorrect
It also introduces the error of redundancy. Repeating what the main sentence was talking about.
