In Egypt in the late Paleolithic

by good_done25 » Fri Jul 31, 2009 5:23 am
In Egypt in the late Paleolithic period, the climate changed, pastures became deserts, and the inhabitants were forced to withdraw to the land bordering the Nile from their hunting grounds.
(A) inhabitants were forced to withdraw to the land bordering the Nile from their hunting grounds
(B) inhabitants had been forced to withdraw from their hunting grounds to the land that bordered the Nile
(C) inhabitants were forced to withdraw from their hunting grounds to the land bordering the Nile
(D) inhabitants having been forced to, withdrew from their hunting grounds to the land that bordered the Nile
(E) inhabitants withdrew, because they were forced to, from their hunting grounds to the land bordering the Nile

OA C IMO B

wanted to know how brodering is correct as the complete sentence is in past tense so should not we use bordered

IMO C

Two things:

a) One the sentence uses the idiom From X to Y. Only C uses it correctly.

b) Answer choice B uses "Inhabitants had been forced to withdraw", which is not parallel with climate changed, pastures became deserts. Choice C uses parallelism correctly.

C.

B: the other items in the list are in simple past tense, so this item should also be in simple past and not in past perfect as in B.

D, E:wordy and awkward.

between A& C : A is wrong as 'withdraw from a to b' seems to be the correct idiom.

Isn't the portion coloured is parallel.....
I know correct answer is C.....but inhabitants withdrew seems parallel to the sentence....

My pick is C. correct idiomatic usage: From X to Y and withdraw from
You withdraw money from bank/ ATM...not withdraw to ...mind that

Past perfect is used when you have two events in past and one event happened before the other event, but here after climate changed, pastures became deserts inhabitants withdrew and not before hence the use of past perfect in B is wrong.

Here a simple past is required and C provides it.
