In a certain kindergarten, every child has got either a dog or a cat or both. 18 children have got dogs only and 6 children have got both dogs and cats. If there are 30 children in the kindergarten, how many of them have cats?

A. 6
B. 12
C. 14
D. 16
E. 20

The OA is B.

I'm confused by this PS question. Experts, any suggestion about how to solve it? Thanks in advance.

Hello LUANDATO.

Let's see if I can help you.

There are 30 children and 18 have got dogs only. Then the other 12 children have got cats or both, but in each case, all the 12 children have got cats. Therefore, the correct answer is the option B.

I hope it helps.

We can use the equation:

Total = Dogs only + Cats only + Both + Neither

30 = 18 + c + 6 + 0

30 = 24 + c

6 = c

Since 6 children have cats only and another 6 children have both cats and dogs, 12 children have cats.

Answer: B
