Let's say there are 100 apples in the barrel.

45% of the apples weigh MORE THAN 81 grams
This means 55% of the apples weigh LESS THAN OR EQUAL to 81 grams
In other words, 55 apples weigh LESS THAN OR EQUAL to 81 grams

81% of the apples weigh LESS THAN 145 grams
This means 19% of the apples weigh MORE THAN OR EQUAL to 145 grams
In other words, 19 apples weigh MORE THAN OR EQUAL to 145 grams

To summarize, we have:
....55 apples....81 grams.............145 grams... 19 apples...

55 + 19 = 74
We've now accounted for 74 apples, which means the remaining 26 apples must be BETWEEN 81 grams and 145 grams.

Answer: C

Since 45% of the apples weigh more than 81 grams, and 81% of the apples weigh less than 145 grams, 45 + 81 - 100 = 26 percent weigh between 81 and 145 grams.

Answer: C
