Generally most of the applicants have good 4-5 years of work experience. Although it is not just the work experience that counts but also what you did there like-what were your achievements, what initiative you took, what changes you drove in your workplace etc. So keeping this factor in mind, make your decision.

Furthering what Kavita said;
- Typically colleges look for 4-5 years of work-ex because that's the amount of time for someone fresh out of college with average insight to develop a rudimentary 'business sense' and decent clarity on their professional goals.

Answering your question, some people can develop the above characteristics whilst in college. I know some very enterprising individuals who started their own companies (albeit small ones or failures or both) while studying in highly competitive atmospheres without sacrificing on their grades.
Moreover, their work was in line with some passions that they held dear and wanted to further in the course of their lives. If you feel you have done something very worthwhile in your UG/PG days that speaks of your capabilities, I am sure it will be worthy of the same tag as 'work experience'

Thats a great response eloquentgent I have only one year of experience and I am going for PG this fall and an MBA later.

Is 1 year of Work-Ex any useful??

Its not actually 1 year of work experience that is useful but the kind and quality of wrk you have done in that 1 year will be useful..

I will have one year of Work-ex in IT field (software engineer) but i want to apply for Finance course..

Also i have cleared FRM level1, and will be taking FRM level2 in May 2012.

As per the ISB Info session attended by me last week, I feel you can cover on 1 aspect of your application's weak point by covering up in other.
So even if you have less than 2 yrs of exp (which for example ISB considers a min requirement) if you have some extra-ordinary profile which convinces the panel to take you in, there shouldn't be any problem with the no of exp.

@Siva : In the same session they had cited examples of their Alums who had joined them after building their profiles through MS.So even for other universities I guess there shouldn't be any prob.
