If X<O, is y>0? Q159 DS

by davo45 » Fri Mar 04, 2011 9:17 pm
Would appreciate someone to explain to me why Statement 1 is sufficient ?

If X<O, is y>0?

(1) X/Y < 0
(2) Y - X > 0

Understand X = -2, Y=3, thus -2/3 < 0.

BUT

Say X = -2 and Y < 0, i.e -3, thus 2/3 > 0. therefore why is this statement still sufficient?

Thank[/spoiler]

(2) y - x > 0
Statement 1: x/y < 0
Only possible when x and y have opposite signs.
As x < 0, y must be greater than 0.

Sufficient

Statement 2: (y - x) > 0
Say, x = -2, now
  • 1. If y = -1 => (y - x) = 1 > 0
    2. If y = 2 => (y - x) = 4 > 0
Not sufficient

The correct answer is A.

You cannot take such combination as it violates statement 1. Statement 1 says x/y is less than zero. Hence, whatever combination you select for x and y, must satisfy the condition given in statement 1.

Thank you Anurag for the explanation. Makes sense.

Regards

Charles.

P.S. Since I am in Beijing, similar to India in Timezone, we most proabably may be crossing paths via BTG soon.
