If X and Y are consecutive integers (Y>X), which of the following statements could be false?

1. The multiplication XY is an even number.
2. (Y/X) > 1.
3. (X + Y) is always an odd number.

A. 1 only.
B. 2 only.
C. 1 and 2 only.
D. 1 and 3 only.
E. 1, 2 and 3.

The OA is the option B.

Could anyone help me here? I don't know how to prove that the correct answer is the option B. I thought that the answer was C.

If X and Y are consecutive integers, then one number must be EVEN and the other number must be ODD.
If one number is ODD and one number is EVEN, then their product must be EVEN
So, statement 1 (The product XY is an even number) is ALWAYS TRUE
In other words, statement 1 can never be false

So, we can eliminate answer choices A, C, D and E

Answer: B

Hello M7MBA.

Let's take a look.

We know that:

- X and Y are consecutive integers and Y>X.

1. The multiplication XY is an even number.

Now, since X and Y are consecutive integers, then one of then must be even and the other one must be odd. Therefore, their product will be ALWAYS even. Hence, this statement NEVER could be false.

2. (Y/X) > 1.

If X=2, then Y=3 and therefore Y / X = 3 / 2 =1,5 > 1.
If X=-2, then Y=-1 and therefore Y / X = -1 / -2 =1 / 2 < 1.

Hence, this statement sometimes is true and sometimes is false. COULD BE FALSE.

3. (X + Y) is always an odd number.

Since one of the numbers is even and the other one is odd, then their sum X+Y will always be ODD. Hence, this statement NEVER could be false.

This implies that the correct answer is the option B.

I hope it helps.
