Say there are x numbers of males students; thus, there are 84 - x numbers of female students. We have to get the value of 84 - x.

Let's take each statement one by one.

1) 2/3 of the students in Section 1 are female.

We don't know about this information for Section 2. Insufficient.

2) 1/2 of the students in Section 2 are male.

We don't know about this information for Section 1. Insufficient.

(1) and (2) together

Since we do not how many students are there in section 1 and Section 2, we cannot find the number of females in each section. Insufficient.

The correct answer: E
