If a free society stands for anything at all, it stands for the fact that a person belongs to himself, not to others, and not to the society as a whole. That is why we, in this society, cannot and do not prevent competent adults from entering into marriages. This is a matter that relates entirely to an individual's private life and the decision belongs, therefore, to the individual.

Which of the following is an assumption on which the author has based her claim?
All adults are competent to make decisions that affect their own lives.
The society of which the author speaks is a free one.
Decisions about marriage are fundamental to personal happiness.
The society of which the author speaks at one time imposed restrictions on individual decisions about marriage.
The right to marry is fundamental.

Ok..

First the author makes a claim about FREE society.
Then, based on that claim, she says WE in THIS society cannot prevent competent adults from entering into marriages.

She is basing her conclusion on the first sentence. That means she is assuming THIS society is free too.

B is the option that reflects this.
