Hi Lisa,

I am writing to you asking for advice , i am currently writing my application essays . I am trying to relate my current profession to my future pre-MBA one. i personally beleive that an International Business development Director in an organisation is more or less like a management consultant. both have to have the sratigic view and both has to use the company's stratigic espirations as a guide line for any revenue generating improvements in processes with specific emphasis on marketing and sales.

thats why i beleive i need to have the full exposure to all business functions and emphasis on marketing.

the only difference i can see is that the first is internal and industry specific and the later is external and more of a generalist.

Again, i am trying to show the relation between my current job and my future goals.

am i right in principle?? would appreciate your advice.

Regards

Dear yezz,

I think you can make the case that your internal role is like a consultant. What is important is to touch upon the skills you would use as a consultant that you are successfully employing in your current role--problem solving, analysis, interpersonal, communication, teamwork, etc.

You're on the right path--just be confident in your answer as you will want to echo it in your interviews.

Good luck,
Lisa

Hi Lisa,

Hope all is well with you. i would appreciate if can advice on whether I am addressing the questions in the most efficient way?

The full essay set of my school is listed below, and i want your advice on my overall approach to the full set of essays.

)tell us about your career objectives and how the MBA will help you achieve it?

Though the question is not asking for any motives, but rather objectives and how MBA will take me there, i find it extremely hard to write down a logically coherent essay if i do not highlight my motives behind my career decisions and a brief about my career to date, analysis of my strengths and weaknesses and highlighting the gap. also to relate that specific program to my needs and goals.

There is no word limit, however I was advised by the admissions officers not to exceed one side of an A4 paper.

Only when i establish the above i can logically relate the school program to my goals.

I will start like this

The first paragraph: The motive behind my long term career goal, my long term goal itself..

The second paragraph: My personal belief and philosophy that lead me to where i am today in my career in.

3rd paragraph: I can conclude that my motive, long term career goal, my personal beliefs lead me through out my career results in an unquestionable short term career goal decision.

Shorter paragraphs: about each job highlighting the skills, and achievement

One paragraph about the gap.

then i will conclude the essay with why this school and the related specifics

2) tell us about your current job responsibilities?

3) what positions of responsibilities have you held, what have you gained from that?

I believe that is this is a career progression + achievments + leadership.

Also this one i think should support my why MBA essay in that i have some of the the right skills that i can utilize in the course and in my job direclty after the MBA.

4)What single event or achievement has been most significant in your life? What were the results of this event or achievement?

I will adress this one as it is drawing on my values
5) tell us about your extra cirricular activities - give details of your hobbies, sporting activities and other outside interests e.g. work in the community.

straight forward question
