With regard to your question about business schools requiring results at the time of application, that varies from school to school. DEFINITELY call up the admissions offices of each school and ask what their policy is.

With regard to your proposed schedule for apps, I would be wary. Personally I think it's not a good move to be preparing for the GMAT while simultaneously writing up your apps. Writing your app essays is a full-time job, and the GMAT can be kind of a distraction. In your particular case, I would consider applying Round 2, which will buy you more time. Applying Round 2 is totally fine as well.

With regard to school selection, I encourage you to ask your question in the Researching MBA Programs forum. You can talk to folks about how to select programs there.

And finally, with regard to your last question about testing--the GMAT is a cool test in that in can be taken pretty much at any time. Usually you need to schedule 2-3 weeks in the advance at a minimum and you can walk into a testing center to take it.
