I have an MSF. Will that affect my chances for an EMBA?

Hello Stacey,

I have only a 3.1 undergrad, so I got an MSF last year, earning a 3.97 and valedictorian honors. Can I be accepted to the Executive MBA programs at Wharton, Columbia, NYU or Cornell?

16 years in IT as a project manager
Leader of a 20 person team located in India and the U.S.

I had a look at your resume and I'd say that you fit the general profile of a successful applicant to either of the Cornell Executive MBA programs. I encourage you to discuss your background and career interests in greater detail with me or with one of our Admissions Advisors. You can read more about our programs at www.cornellemba.com .

I'd also like to offer a suggestion regarding your resume and its use in your pursuit of joining an Executive MBA program. You should provide some information not only about the specific technical tasks in which you are involved, but something that provides a sense of your organizational experience (e.g., number of direct reports; budget responsibility; project management examples). I see many people who are in technical fields prepare resumes for review for an Executive MBA program that are really prepared on a basis more applicable to job search.

Dear James,

I think you have a competitive profile for an executive program at many schools, but it is how well you put together your application that will get you the positive decision. I do agree with Danny that it is important to highlight your managerial skills and accomplishments in your resume, not provide a task list. Likewise, you want to stay away from being too technical with your content. This is a common issue for folks in technical jobs like IT and engineering as it requires you to think differently about your professional experience that you normally do.

I was concerned that an MSF might preclude and EMBA.
Also, great points about my resume. I can see that hiring an admissions consultant could be very helpful.
