I took the GMAT in '03 to get into a Master's program in Accounting. They required a 450. I got a 490.
Now I'm looking into Ph.d programs & they require a 640. Have no clue how to get started. Any advice would be great.

Check out the resources tab above and look at the study plans.
If you're going to study by yourself the Manhattan GMAT books are pretty solid. Also, you'll need to by the Official Guide.

It sounds like you have to have the OG 12th edition, so I'd buy that for sure. And www.mba.com has two free practice tests, so that can help you pick where to start (on which section or type of question).

I'm planning to check out some of the free trial events that they list on here, too, to pick up some tips and see what the companies have to say. From there maybe take a class if it seems like I need it to get a good score. And that post on the front page of this Strategy section today with all the book recommendations looks really helpful, so I bookmarked that for later if I decide to pick up any of those books.

Karl has the right idea. The first thing you need to do is take some practice tests to see where you stand. The Princeton Review has a free one here https://theprincetonreview.com/free-onli ... tests.aspx. After you find out how much work you have to do, you can decide whether you need a course or if you can do self-study.

It is wide ranging and covers all aspects; great for newbies! If I were you, I'd poke around some online sites to find some cheap, used ones.
