How to start preparing for GMAT

by chhavi_lahoti » Thu May 10, 2007 9:32 am
Hi All,

I have just begun to start preparing for GMAT. I want to take the test by End of September 2007. First of all is that much of time sufficient to score 700+.

I have downloaded quite a lot of stuff as suggested in this forum, like the OG10 and 11, some Kaplan and Princeton material and the GMATprep test. However still at loggerheads as to where to start with. Especially need some uidance n good reference material on Maths.

Is is a good idea to take a Princeton or Kaplan Coaching in Bangalore, or just start preparing on own for sometime stick to a particular study strategy and if i see the need then later take the coaching.

Looking forward to valuable advice n guidance from experienced GMAT busters and fellow aspirants.

Also where can i buy these books? are there any forums where people sell their books.

Please help!

Thanks in advance
Chhavi

Here are two places I would start for your prep:

https://beatthegmat.blocked - the Beat The GMAT Study Blog
https://www.beatthegmat.com/wiki/ - GMAT resource wiki

There is a forum here to sell used books: https://www.beatthegmat.com/viewforum.php?f=27

Best of luck!

Thanks Eric,

I did download lot of stuff from here, and have begun with this... just started to get the feel of GMAT. I did also go through your suggested best books to refer and would soon probably join a GMAT course as well, most possibly Princeton. As of now just giving myself some time to create base and understanding of GMAT. Let me know if you have any other good suggestion and prep resources to refer to.

Regards
Chhavi

Hi UmanG:

I like the PR book because it is really easy to read and provides an excellent basic overview of the GMAT. I'd advise starting with this book over Kaplan because the Kaplan book touches on more advanced material and is not as enjoyable a read.

Best of luck!

Hi Uman,

Yeah i agree with you Eric's tips n blog are very helpful, gave me a lot of ideas to begin with n strength that i can do it :)

Though i have not read the Kaplan book so far, but i downloaded the PR manual from the net and started reading it.. and i agree to Eric, it is good and touches the basic and helped me get that interest, whatever i have read so far the PR manual is really fun to go through. So probably for people who start studying after a long break, PR manual is good as its approach is simple n basic to begin with n gives u that initial confidence. Let me know if you have read the Kaplan book and find it better.

Eric, one more question to you, on most of the GMAT forum i have red better review about Kaplan n Manhattan books compared to PR, and i m planning to join PR coaching classes, is it advisale to join them while i can keep referring to all these other books n practice?

I don't see a problem reading these other books while taking the PR course. Never hurts to have multiple perspectives... :)
