How to pick a better answer

by Jadeyue » Wed Oct 31, 2012 10:52 am
Thelonious Monk, who was a jazz pianist and composer, produced a body of work both rooted in the tride-piano tradition of Willie (The Lion) Smith and Duke Ellingto, yet in many ways he stood apart from tge mainstream jazz repertory.

A)Thelonious Monk, who was a jazz pianist and composer, produced a body of work both rooted
B)Thelonious Monk, the jazz pianist and composer, produced a body of work that was rooted both
C)Jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk, who produced a body of work that rooted
D)Jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk produced a body of work that was rooted
E)Jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk produced a body of work rooted both

I think both B and D are correct. However, the right answer is D. Would any one please explain to me why we pick D over B?

Thank you very much.

hi,

The problem with B is the usage of both x and y. In this case the 2 components x and y are not parallel. One is about the tride piano tradition of Willie SMith and the other is Duke Ellington and not a tradition.

Hey,

Anup is correct in pointing out the parallelism.

You should also notice here that ,yet is a coordinating conjunction and it is joining two independent clauses together.

Aside: For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So (FANBOYS) are used to join two independent clauses.

This is signalling to us that there is not a second item for the parallel structure Both X and Y.

I thought to myself, "There are not two parallel elements here and there is no possible way to get two parallel elements." Eliminate A, B, E

In answer choice C, there is an incomplete sentence Jazz...Monk which has no verb.
