how to gauge my gmat ability

Expert replies
by vikram4689 » Tue Oct 09, 2012 11:46 pm
over last few months, i have practiced gmat problems extensively and have given some mock exam. my concern is that many of the questions that i see in gmat prep software are the ones that i have seen sometime bak during my preparation.

i am a re-taker and gave GMAT PREP 1.0 last week and scored 770 and 760. i expected to see some repeat questions and i did see.

today i gave GMAT PREP 2.0 and unfortunately some of the question in 1.0 and 2.0 were common and today i got 770.

i have also given free mgmat (perceived as most-accurate test other than gmat prep) and scored 780 but unfortunately i saw repeats here as well. i gave 6 mgmat test during my first preparation.

my concern is how should i gauge my ability ?

You can detract 30 points for distractions like noise, a different environment, anxiety, etc. If your score turns out to be lower, it will probably be due to special factors (feeling sick or really strong anxiety).

It is really tough to say given the repeats. The 30 point drop Kasia is talking about is typically for 'fresh' exams (i.e exams with questions you have not seen before).

Honestly though, you have to try to get the score part out of you head. You knew enough to get a bunch of questions right and that is all you can do come exam day. Stay focused and you will do fine.

When you see a familiar question, be sure to take about 2 minutes to answer it. Otherwise, you will give yourself extra time to tackle other questions, and this will skew your score.

Cheers,
