How representative of GMAT Quant is the OG 12th Ed. ?

How representative of GMAT Quant is the OG 12th Ed. ?

I understand that the exact questions won't appear on the real thing, but will the content and theory behind all the questions in the 12th Ed. more or less comprise everything I need to know for the actual GMAT? In other words, is there a concept in the OG that I wouldn't see on the real test?

Also, in terms of difficulty, how closely does the OG correlate with the GMAT?

YES! Infact, you might even see some question on the real GMAT test right out of the OG. I took the test in Feb and I used the OG 11, and there were several questions right out of the OG. The OG is a must. Don't hesitate to purchase it. Use it more than any other book. Keep in mind that the explanations SUCK in the OG, so to review, go with Manhattan or some other company.

Yes, the OG is probably the single most representative source you can find. I've also had questions straight from OG11 on actual GMATs, with maybe just names or numbers changed slightly.

If you're scoring super-high in math, like in the upper 40s as your raw score, you might want to seek out harder materials too. But for the vast majority of people, the OG is great.

I dont have the OG12 but only the OG11? I was thinking of just mastering all of the OG11 questions rather than purchase OG12. In theory I am happy to buy the book if I felt it would definitely get me a higher score? But right now it doesnt feel to buy a new book when I havent mastered every question in the book I have (OG11). What do you think? Shall I stick with OG11? Till I get a decent score?

Do you think all the questions / concepts are sufficient to get a 650 score?

I haven't seen OG12 yet, but I remember reading somewhere that the majority of the questions are the same as in the OG11. You'll be fine with either one - the material tested hasn't changed much.

If you truly understand everything in the OG, yes, you can get a 650. However, simply doing all the problems in the OG will by no means guarantee any specific score.

I seem to be in the minority with this opinion, but I think the OG12 is substantially different from OG11. Half the DS questions are new, which is itself a major change (and the DS section has been expanded), and in the Quant section, there are two other differences I consider noteworthy:

-OG12 now (finally) includes a few number theory (divisibility, etc) questions that are of a similar difficulty level of the questions on the current real GMAT;

-OG12 gives a much, much better indication of the types of word problems you'll likely encounter on test day. In particular, there are many more problems in the new edition on weighted averages, abstract ratios, and set (Venn diagram and other) counting.

Overall, the problems feel more like current GMAT questions, and since it's not an expensive book, I'd recommend getting a copy for the DS section alone. I'm still in the process of assessing the changes to the Verbal section.

Hi, i took the gmat in January and scored 530 - After few months of research and analysis i think i really need an MBA from TOP school. I am again motivated and i want to get over MBA this summer.

I am planning to take it again by end of August which gives me 3 full months.

I have following books available:

Princeton Review 2007
OG 11
KAPLAN GMAT 5th Edition 2003


I know i don't have proper books rite now to study and one of the strong reason of my earlier 530 was the absence of any proper study plan and strategy.

I will start my prep from 1st June , that gives me 5 more days to buy books and prepare a solid study plan.


This forum has guided so many individuals and i feel really inspired after reading the success stories of people here.


I would really appreciate if you can suggest me book names that are must to win GMAT. My target score is 700.

I am looking forward for your help guys .

Dude,

I put up a thread called "Is it just me or did OG12 get harder?".

I see that somebody around here, no less a respected instructor, shares my belief.

Yes dude, OG12 is the best OG guide so far for the Q. I thought that there were different, more relevant types of questions on DS and PS that I never saw before. My suspicions have been confirmed by a knowledgeable source (Ian).

I saw very little overlap between previous OGs and OG12 in the final third section of the DS section. I would assume that it is the same for the PS section. As a matter of fact, I think I have not run into almost any problems before after question number 70 or so on the DS section (there are around 160 in total)

There are also some very tough RC passages as well that I have never seen.

Actually now that I think about it, ETS claims that OG12 contains 300 never before seen questions.

I do believe that these 300 questions are mostly upper bin material. Which addresses (at least in part) what I and most people have been complaining about the OG books all this time : that they are not totally relevant to covering 700 level types of questions.

At least OG12 covers some. Definitely more than prior versions!

Man one thing that is frustrating about all these products created by ETS like OG and the GMATPrep, you keep seeing the same damn problems over again.

Good to see OG12 coming up with fresh blood!

Can anybody please suggest is OG12 worth buying for verbal also? I am struggling in verbal and I have only one month left for my GMAT exam date. I already have OG-10,11,verbal review.

What i could figure out from the above posts is that so far the OG's have not been enough for getting scores of 700+ .The OG 12 has come closer to this as it contains new questions similar to the real GMAT.
People,could you please let me know what material has the similar difficulty level questions as the real GMAT?

Okay here is the deal guys. OG10 has 1500 questions. OG 11 and 12 have about 900.

So you're comparing around 130 questions on SC versus like 230 on OG12. A similar ratio will exist for the other sections.

The thing is, you're gonna see a lot of the questions on Powerprep and Gmatprep that you covered on OG 10 and 11. Most especially the Q on Powerprep and the V on both sections.

But if you buy OG12 you're not gonna see those questions anywhere except for the beginning questions on each section which you're gonna see on 10 and 11.

The 1000 PS,SC,CR,DS questions have all of the material covered in OG 10 and 11. But no explanations.

If you're tight on budget I would just get OG12 because it has better Q and overall new material in both Q and V. Then I would just look at the 1000's because if you keep doing questions over again you'll learn just from the answers.

I would just get 10 and 12 and use the 1000's. Do 10 and 12 first to get explanations and use the 1000's and then use Google to look up questions that you couldn't figure out how they got the answer. People post those on sites like this and Testmagic.

As for the Q and the V there is no material that simulates the types of questions asked as close as GMATprep and Powerprep. That's because they were created by the testmakers.
