Let's take each statement one by one.

1) Jim's friend Steve, who is exactly 2 years older than Jim, turned 25 years old in 1972.

=> Jim turned 23 years in 1972; thus, he would turn 23 + (1989 - 1972) = 40 in 1989.

However, this is insufficient. The question asks, "How old, rounded to the nearest year, was Jim in May 1989?" Since we do not know in which month Jim was born, the nearest year and be fixed. It may be 1989 or 1990. No unique answer. Insufficient.

2) In March 1982, Jim turned 33 years old.

=> In March 1989, Jim turned 33 + (1989 - 1982) = 40 years old. Thus, rounded to the nearest year Jim was 40 years in May 1989. Sufficient.

The correct answer: B

Hope this helps!
