1) There is a total of 20 women and men in the room.
2) The number of men in the room equals the square of the number of women in the room.

Say there are m men and w women, so we have to find out the value of m – n.

Let's take each statement one by one.

1) There is a total of 20 women and men in the room.

m + n = 20. Insuffcient.

2) The number of men in the room equals the square of the number of women in the room.

m = n^2. Insuffcient.

(1) and (2) together

So, we have m + n = 20 and m = n^2

Thus, n^2 + n = 20 => n(n + 1) = 20 = 4*5 => n = 4

Thus, m = n^2 = 4^2 = 8

So, m – n = 8 – 4 = 4.

The correct answer: C
