If the car traveled 6 fewer miles per gallon in the city than on the highway, A car traveled 462 miles per tankful of gasoline on the highway and 336 miles per tankful of gasoline in the city. If the car traveled 6 fewer miles per gallon in the city than on the highway, how many miles per gallon did the car travel in the city?

IMO B) 16
method:
In city. let's say the car travels x miles per galon
now car travels 336 miles in the city for 336/x gallons. so one full tank has 336/x gallons.
now the highway:
the car travels x+6 miles per gallon. Total gasoline in the tank=336/x gallons
so the car travels (330/x)*(x+6) miles =462
solve it and you get x=16

Hope it helps,
-Prem
The powers of two are bloody impolite!!

I got (B) as my answer as well.

Rates:
city = r - 6
highway = r

Distances:
city = 336
highway = 462

336/(r-6) = 462/(r)

126r = 2772

r = 22

rate for city is r - 6

22-6 = 16
