How Important is the TOEFL

by amir.kabir » Tue Aug 02, 2011 8:00 am
Hi everybody

just got my TOEFL SCORE (R21 - L24 - S29 - W22 )Toal 96
Not what I expected, just thought I hit the 100.
My question is how important is the score for application.
I want to apply to following schools:

UC IRVINE ( min. 80)
USC Marshall ( don't know min)
Georgia Tech (min 100)
UC DAVIS ( don't know min)
Boston University ( min 100)

I going to smash the GMAT in October and expecting 700.
If I have a good GMAT Score along with some good essays, do I have a chance for the above mentioned programs. Or do I have to take the TOEFL again?

Thanks a lot in advance
Regards
Amir

As long as you have beaten their minimum required score, the Toefl is not that important. I would put it at the bottom of almost all your other application materials - Essays, letters of recommendation, GMAT score etc. If you "smash the GMAT" :) you should be good.

Many schools have their minimum at 100 so I would recommend your retaking the test again to score above that threshold if you want to be able to apply to a broader selection of schools.

It is important to reach and beat the minimum, as admissions folks want to make sure you will be able to follow class and contribute at a high level. They also want to make sure you have written your own application, and the TOEFL is therefore a good data point.

Hi Alex

I understand your point, but actually iam missing only 4 points. And my question is if a very good gmat according with good essays will compensate the 4 pints or are the admission so specific about the 4 points.
thanks

A few times my clients have fallen short on the TOEFL by very little and contacted the admissions office. The answer was they have a minimum. So yes having great essays and a solid verbal GMAT will help, but I would take the minimum for what is---a minimum. Sorry Amir, but I would advise you to study again and who knows, you might surpass the target comfortably.

Good Luck!!!
