how does the gmat scoring works for quant?

I gave my GMAT prep 1 today. Got a score of 670 ( Math :47, verbal : 35)

I had 18 wrong answers in quant out of 37 but the score is "47(73%)". I don't understand why 47 with so many wrong answers. Can some one please clarify?

The exam is adaptive. Basically, if you get questions right you get harder questions and the opposite if you get questions wrong. You must have been getting a lot of difficult questions right and the REALLY difficult questions wrong. Hope that helps.

Thanks Jim. One more thing, i have my actual exam booked on Aug 27 and till now i have been scoring from 620 -670. should i postpone my exam? kindly suggest. I am aiming for a score of 710+.

Hi chitrasekar2k5,

The real GMAT includes questions that are "experimental", meaning that they DO NOT COUNT. It's possible that you got many of those experimental questions wrong and got the questions that "counted" correct. It's not likely that you'll end up in that same situation again on Test Day, so it's important to continue working and try to get a few more questions correct.

If you're concerned about your performance, then you should push your Test Date back. Even a few weeks to a month of extra study time can help you to get in some extra practice and improve significantly.
