How am i wrong in this quest, pls help solve..

Hello guys,

I was taking a prep test and came across this ques..

In 1991, was the number of people in City A three times greater then the number of people in City B?

1) In 1991, there were approximately 1.1 million more people in City A than in City B.

2) In 1991, the 300,000 Catholics in City A made up 20% of its population, and the 141,000 Buddhists in City B made up 30% of its population.

I answered as E, " statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient to answer the question asked, and additional data specific to the problem are needed."

But to my surprise the answer is given as B "statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient to answer the question." with no explanation.. Can somebody explain this..

This kind of question would really get me angry too, but here's the solution:

If 20% of the total population of city A (the religions here don't matter obviously, just there to throw you off) is 300,000, then the total population of city A:

300,000=.20X
X= 1,500,000

Then if 30% of the total pop. of city B is 141,000, then the total population of city B:
141,000=.30x
x=470,000

So, (470,000x3) < 1,500,000
