Let us next observe how the money is returned.
Winning horse - 4 times the amount betted.
Second place- 3 times the amount betted
Third place- The bet amount is returned
So if Raju got back 6000 then let us see what are the possibilities

Looking at the table above we find

(i) can be true
(ii) can be true as R can be the last horse in each of the 3 possibilities
(iii) Can be true

Hence option (iv) is the answer

It would be better if you just write "Challenge Question" in the subject box.That way only people who are interested in solving them would go to the post.


I guess it would a good idea for other people of the community also to post such questions under the header:-"Challenge Question".
That way people who like math can have a go at it.

I would say the a lot of the practice problems have become very common and can be found in numerous sources.So, I guess ,as we are not question makers ,the questions have to be taken from somewhere.
Also,what is the harm in posting a question that has never been discussed in the forum and can help the community members to learn tricks and identify their mistakes.

Also,on numerous occasions I have seen that an answer is posted for a question by someone.
Then ,you also post a subsequent soln. which sometimes is same as the former solution sometimes not.
Now,wouldn't it be wrong to say that you are merely copying the answer and increasing your post count?
I surely hope that you actually solve those questions and sometimes they turn out to be the same.
[I have personally seen some of your methods and they seem excellent for problem solving as well for saving time-Well someone(I dont remember the name) did call u a math-whiz]

I guess you also have to see the other person's point of view.

All said and done,I would like to say that unless the question has already been discussed on the forum and it is a good practice problem,it is okay to post it in the forum(whatever be its source-Ofcourse i am not talking about the live GMAT questions over here) and help the community members to gain from it.I hope you also agree on this point.
