Jim has 5 pieces of string. He needs to choose the piece that will be able to go around his 36-inch waist. His belt broke, and his pants are falling down. The piece needs to be at least 4 inches longer than his waist so he can tie a knot in it, but it cannot be more than 6 inches longer so that the ends will not show from under his shirt. Which of the following pieces of string will work the best?
A. 3&4/5 feet
B. 3&2/3 feet
C. 3&3/8 feet
D. 3&¼ feet
E. 2&½ feet

So we are looking for string that is: 40 inches =< x =< 42 inches

The best answer would be 3 & 1/3 feet, but that is not a choice...

The 3 & 3/8 feet, is a little longer than 40 inches (40.4 inches approx).

1 feet = 12 inches
Waist = 36 inches = 3 feet.
Extra length has to be greater than 4/12 = 1/3 = .33 and less than 6/12 = ½ = .5

In all options the fraction part is standard: 1/2, 1/3, 2/3, and 4/5, except 3/8. Let’s start eliminating options:
E: 2 & X - Eliminate straight.
A: 4/5 = .8 – eliminate
B: 2/3 = .67 – eliminate
C: need division – leave for time being.
D: ¼ = .25 eliminate.

Hence, C is the answer.
