THe propartion of womer among students enrolled in higher education programs has increased over the past decades.This is partky shown by the fact that in 1959,only 11 percnt of women between twenty and twenty one were enrolled in college,While in 1981,30 percent of the women between twenty and twenty one were enrolled in college.

To evaluate the argument above,it would be most useful to compare 1959 and 1981 with regard to which of the following chracterstics?

(A)The percentage of women between twenty and twenty one who were not enrolled in college
(B)The percentage of women between twenty and twenty five who graduated from college
(C)The percentage of women who, after attending college entered highky paod professions
(D)The percentage of men between twenty and twenty one who were enrolled in college
(E)The percentage of men who graduated from high school

The argument of the author is that the proportion of women among students enrolled in higher education programs has increased. For this the author has cited the increase from 1959 to 1981 in the percentage of women in the age group 20 - 21 who were enrolled in college.

However, to know whether the proportion of women in the total number of students has actually increased or not, it is important to know the total number of women as a percentage of total number of students in the higher education programs. To get an idea about the total number of students, it is also important to know the percentage of men who are enrolling for college (apart from the number of women who are enrolling for college). Comparing D (the percentage of men in the given age group who are enrolling for college) for both the years will give an idea abou the total number of students who enrolled for college in both the years. Thus D is the correct answer.
