Help To Shortlist B-Schools

Hi,
I am an Indian Male 24 years.

Currently I have shortlisted the following schools:ISB,Kelley,Tepper,MCdonough,Smeal,Boston.
Can somebody help me in suggesting more/better Schools according to my profile.

Your Experience is less for your shortlisted B Schools, Also your profile doesn't looks to be stand out. IT(In Broad Sense) Guy from India, is the most common profile.

If you can write a really world class story for your profile, otherwise I would suggest you to wait till 4+ years experience.

If you very desparate to go for MBA right now, you may try for EUROPEAN B Schools in Germany or Netherlands.

Though your experience is on the lesser side, you do qualify for a few good programs. I am naming a few here

HBS 2+2
Almost all colleges in UK, respectfully ignore LBS


Athabasca University
Applicants with a bachelor degree must have at least 3 years of managerial-level work experience; those with an acceptable professional designation but no degree require at least 5 years of managerial-level work experience. Resume required for application

Brock University
Work experience is not required but is preferred. Resume required for application.

Cape Breton University
A minimum of two years experience in community economic development. Resume required for application.

Carleton University
Resume required for application.

Concordia University
At least two years of meaningful work experience. Resume required for application.

Dalhousie University
At least 3 years. Resume required for application.

First Nations University of Canada
Minimum 3 years work experience. Resume required for application.

HEC Montreal
A minimum of three years of work experience. Resume required for application.

Lakehead University
Resume required for application.

Lansbridge University

Well, to cut to the chase, two and half years now, means three+ when you apply, which is about one year less than the average, but since there are plenty of people with one year more than the average, you are fine. For example: Smeal's median is 44 months of work experience when entering. You will have what 36-39?
All is fine and dandy. Just apply.

Wow that's an odd list of schools to suggest.

dhonu121, your profile could easily qualify for better-ranked programs than many of those mentioned. It does depend on quality essays of course, and you have your work cut out for you based on your profile. But no matter what, you cannot apply to HBS 2+2, as that program is specifically for candidates who are still in university, currently completing their undergrad degree.

ISB is going to be a tough nut to crack for you right now. Getting more experience (and a better GMAT score) would help you a lot if you're keen on ISB. However, you could easily be in good shape for the five American schools that you have named.

EssaySnark has seen plenty of candidates with profiles like yours get into Top 15 US schools but again, it comes down to the essays, the stories of accomplishment, etc. The hurdles are (besides being in the oversubscribed pool of Indian IT males) you'd have to show why you need a high-powered MBA from a top American school. And, you may want to try again for the GMAT and bump the score up. It's not mandatory, as the 690 is within range of any top program, but assuming you're considering a Round 2 application anyway, it could help.

It's tough to recommend bschools without knowing more about your goals - we might suggest Babson, for example, if you were interested in entrepreneurship. If you want to offer more information on why you're interested in an MBA, we might be able to help with a better set of recommendations for you.

essaysnark:That was really useful insight.My real plans for MBA currently is in Finance+Marketing.However, having really low insight into these courses(as I am a software developer coding in perl,javascript..etc),I cannot say much.But this is what seems best to me.
However, I personally think that MBA is something which makes you realise what really you are capable of doing.So forgive me if I end up becoming an entrepreneur after my MBA if I find some like minded people.
That said, I really like your advice about my score.I was not satisfied after I saw 690 on my screen.I considered myself 750 guy.However, I really believe that there is more to me that just a GMAT score.
I want to get into the best schools possible for me.
I hope I answered all your queries.Can you suggest schools that I should target(ignoring my above list).

Hi dhonu121,

It's true that you will learn so much about yourself in bschool, that your goals may change quite a bit just from the process of getting the MBA. However, it will be very very difficult for you to get accepted by any top MBA program without having a clear sense of what you want to do with the education. Most schools have essay questions asking about goals and why you want an MBA; one of the most frequent reasons cited for candidates to be rejected is that they did not articulate their goals clearly enough for the adcom. So you'll want to spend some time researching the possibilities and mapping things out before you start on your essays.

Knowing what you want to do will also be a huge help in choosing the appropriate schools, because some schools are much stronger in certain areas than in others. All schools will give you the foundation education in subjects like finance, marketing, accounting, etc. However, different schools have different specializations, and are known to employers for different things, so the job opportunities coming out may be quite different based on where you attend.

Finance and Marketing are both very very different fields. It's possible that you could work on the finance team of a marketing company (such as an advertising agency); or, you could work in marketing for a financial services company (such as ETrade or something). However, there's not that much direct overlap between these two fields. You'll take standard courses in both in bschool so you'll get a sense for these and other functional areas. But it's a little unusual for someone to say they want to go into both finance and marketing. Not sure if that's what you meant by your comment...?

There are many Indians in IT who apply to bschool to change careers to something else. The most common of all careers coming out of bschool are finance, and consulting. Either of those are potentially options for you, though they're obviously quite different! And, there's also a lot of competition, since you have that standard profile.

Anyway, sorry for the super-long post - basically we can't really suggest specific schools unless/until we know a bit more about what you'd like to do with the MBA. Your profile could be appropriate to a lot of schools, so you're probably going to keep going with the research (the BTG forums are a great place for that!) and maybe attend some school info sessions or online chats or whatever to get more insights and start to narrow down your choices.

If you are not that sure, there is a rule of thumb for it.

Join a college which generally chooses people with your profile and you should analyse the colleges based on the alumni after 3-5 years.
Another very good measure is the Firms which recruit there, to make up your mind.

Keep a few macro-judgement factors : Location, Particular(finance and marketing)
Keep a few micro-judgement factors : " suppose you want to be an Entrepreneur in 5 years time".

Choose the college based on some process which will not create cognitive dissonance after you join.

Play with the XL I have attached and colour the colleges you want , definitely want.
Add a few reasons in a new column against the college to why you want it.

Delete the rows of the BSchools which you dont want at all. Colour red the rows which you think you cant reach.

If you wish to apply to top business schools then one of the prerequisites is having significant work experience. Generally candidates have around 4-5 years of full time experience in spite of several term time projects or jobs; so you may be competing with other candidates who have 4-5 years of full time experience and have started significant initiatives at college.
Hence, we would advise you to gain2 more years of work experience before you decide to apply for an MBA. Gmat is not the only things that adcom considers; beyond the academics will also help you in determining your candidature and your work experience plays a vital role as well. In general most of the Indian applicants are from engineering background with a good 4-5 years of work experience. So you would need to differentiate yourself from others . Start thinking what makes you unique and what's that 'hook' that will be key to your application. Make sure you follow the 'show rather than tell' principle so that the admissions committee could really understand your strengths and differentiating factors Although it is not just the work experience that counts but also what you did there like-what were your achievements, what initiative you took, what changes you drove in your workplace etc. So you need to ensure that in your years of work experience you have demonstrated the skills business schools are looking for. This could still put in a strong set of essays for you.
