Well, I'm assuming that because they're different symbols, we're dealing with all different numbers. If that's the case:
1. star= 4.
Because we know that square is less than triangle, we know that the triangle is 3 and the square is 1. Sufficient
2. square= 1.
That doesn't give us anything. The other symbols could be any numbers. Insufficient.
So, it's A

Lets rephrase the equation for ease.
We can write it as

= c
In the first case where the total is 4. The options could be 2+2, 0+4, 4+0,1+3,3+1. Well but we know that a <c. We are left with 2 choices now , either it is 0+4, or 1+3. So choice A is insuffcient.
Choice B Says that a=1. By itself this choice would not help us.
But if we combine the 2 now we know the option 0+4 is out since we know a=1. hence the answer is C.
