This will depend on what schools are you interested in? US schools application starts at a different time for international students, while European schools have a different deadline.

Having your GMAT done by May is GREAT! Because as you know first round for most schools, US and European are around Sept/Oct/Nov of this year. With your GMAt in your pocket, you will be able to come up with a strategy based on your GMAT score and an evaluation of your chances. In fact it also leaves you enough time to retake the GMAT if you feel like you haven't reached your full potential.

In about early June the schools begin to release their essay questions, and then it's time for you to don that thinking cap, and start working on your applications which is a long, tough, and time consuming process, especially if you do it right.
