Question # 8
A has $18 more than what B & C together would have had if both B and C had 1/4 of what A has. How much does A have?

(A) 20

(B) 48

(C) 32

(D) 36

(E) 40

Way I did this:

Let N be how much A has

B+C = 1/4 *n

N= n/4+ 18 ?

the offical answer is:

N= n/4+n/4+18

can someone explain to me where that extra n/4 comes from?

Lets assume A has X dollars . Hence B and C both have $ X/4 each (both B and C had 1/4 of what A has)

Hence the equation is

X - 18 = X/4 + X/4

solving this gives X = 36

Thanks! I should read it more carefully, Both B and C ... B = n/4
C=n/4

or n/4/2

Here is how I did it:

I plugged in the answers & worked backwards:

Started with d)36..it says that B&C are 1/4 of A
B=9 C=9 together that is 18.
It states that A is 18 more than B&C together which means:
B+C+18=A =>9 + 9 +18 = 36

What is OA?

yep that works too 36 is correct
