Bands that are signed to recording contracts with major record
labels generate higher average record sales than do bands who
sign contracts with independent labels. The characteristics of
the record label, such as marketing expertise and promotional
budgets, must be a more important causative factor in record
sales than are characteristics of the band, such as musical
talent and ambition.
Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the
argument above?

a A band’s musical talent is a more important factor in
selling records than its ambition.
b Some independent record labels have as much marketing
expertise as do major labels.
c Consumers state that musical talent is their top criterion in
determining which records to buy.
d Some bands signed to contracts with independent labels
produce top-selling records.
e Major record labels base their decisions to sign bands on
characteristics of the band, including musical talent and
ambition.

OA E .

The stem says its the promotion technique and marketing edge that the band shines rather than talent . What if the big labelled recording company chooses only bands with good music talent ? .This is a cause and effect in disguise .

A causes B ,but if you can prove B causes A or something else causes B ,you have got the right answer.

D Some bands signed to contracts with independent labels
produce top-selling records.
In causation scenarios if we wish to weaken a conclusion that X cause Y , we can show that the same effect Y could be replicated in the absence of X
D says that even independent labels have record sales . Record sales occur in the absence of a Major Record Label

E is in accordance with the conclusion .
E states that the major record labels also associate with musical talent and ambition . But the same can be said to be true of independent labels .Therefore E doesn't prove anything

I also could not find it while looking for an answer. It's from Princeton review GMAT Manual(harder CR problems)

Is Original Answer E?
Can you please explain how other choices can be eliminated?

Hey Brightside, how can you attempt a question without even knowing that the question provider has the answer to the question?

I find C as the most probable answer.

Record sales are generated by consumers and if it is true that consumers buy because of musical talent then the sales of any record whether from independent labels or major labels are justified.

this is a manual from TPR, which they use in class. The problem here is a classwork problem that would be discussed in class by the instructors. But I am not a student of TPR, and just got this manual as I heard it has good prep structure.
