HEC Montréal Admission Question

by ex_an_21 » Thu Mar 07, 2013 6:48 pm
Hello everyone,

First of all, thank you for the useful forum.

I live in Montreal and I have applied to HEC Montreal, John Molson at Concordia and Desautels at McGill. I have just been admitted to HEC Montreal, and as far as I know, I have 30 days to accept or not. However, my best option is McGill, from which I haven't heard yet.

I really want to begin the MBA this year, so my question is this: if I accept HEC Montreal offer, but later I get admitted to Desautels, can I retire from HEC Montreal, or there will be any issue? Because I don't want to waste an offer I already have, versus others that could materialize or not.

Thank you in advance for any advice o guidance.

Hey ex_an_21! Congrats on the HEC acceptance! For your question: What you can do is submit your deposit and acceptance to HEC, and then (fingers crossed!) if McGill comes through, you can inform HEC that you won't be matriculating after all. The only issue would be that you'll probably lose your deposit. Sometimes people use this strategy for exacting the reason you cite: they definitely want to be starting their MBA as soon as possible, and they're willing to use the deposit as a sort of insurance policy. In the grand scheme of things and given how expensive the overall education will be, it's not actually that big a price to pay to ensure you'll be sitting in a bschool classroom in a few months.

HEC is also a good school and if you end up there you'll be in fine shape.

Good luck with McGill - hope you get that one too!!
