Countercurrent heat exchange, a circulatory arrangement in which warm blood leaving the body core passes cooler blood returning from the extremities, allows for heat to pass into regions where little warmth or heat mechanisms exist .

little warmth or heat mechanisms exist

there are few heat mechanisms and little available warmth

POE's are best remedie for such questions

a)little warmth or heat mechanisms exist
the highlighted parts are not llel

b)little warmth or heat mechanisms exists
same as A and verb exists does not agree with heat mechanisms
c)few heat mechanisms and little warmth exists
and carries a compund sub and verb has to be plural if the compund sub is not a unit as in this case , so eliminiated for sub verb misagreement
d)there is little warmth or heat mechanisms available
available is redundant ;little warmth or heat mechanisms is nor llel
e)there are few heat mechanisms and little available warmth

The sentence checks for parallelism .

Little heat OR heat mechanism is not correct .

This implies = Little heat and little heat mechanism .

Mechanism is countable so we need to use FEW and not little .

LITTLE heat or FEW heat mechanisms .

So we can easily eliminate (A), (B).

But I am not really sure what the correct reason for elimination of C would be .

(D) looks a bit awkward .

So its between C and E not completely sure what the diufference is .

But I guess its the subject / verb thing .

Regions (plural) need plural verb ARE .

EXISTS in (C) and IS in (D ) will be incorrect then .

But not sure of this .

guys need your input.

by using and, you will have a compound subject which will require a plural verb exist.
