C.

If you have ambiguity in choosing between C and D (like I had), you can safely eliminate D because it would be impossible for scientists to remove the hormone without knowing to make it.

Good question. thanks for posting this. I selected option D just to find out that's the incorrect choice. Read explanation provided by MGMAT team. some concepts worth jotting!

The intended meaning of the sentence-- Before scientists learned how to make growth hormone synthetically, [growth hormone] had to be painstakingly removed in small amount from the pituitary glands of human cadavers.

What option D is saying here is -- Before learning how to make a synthetic growth hormone, scientists had to remove it painstakingly ... --This means [ scientists were removing synthetic growth hormone from pituitary glands of human cadavers . Nonsensical. How can we removed synthetic hormone from human body? OPTION C is the best choice

One is generally going to be confused between C & D. I opted for D initially, but a closer look at the sentence structuring in D gave it away. The catch here is to understand the meaning and thereby the difference in the following:

1. how to synthesize the growth hormone
2. to make a synthetic growth hormone

The growth hormone is the one removed from pituitary glands for synthesization. 'C' is the right choice.
