As sources of electrical power, windmills now account for only about 2,500 megawatts
nationwide, but production is almost expected to double by the end of the year, which
would provide enough electricity for 1.3 million households.
A. almost expected to double by the end of the year, which would provide
B. almost expected that it will double by the end of the year, thus providing
C. expected that it will almost double by the end of the year to provide
D. expected almost to double by the end of the year and thus to provide
E. expected almost to double by the end of the year, which would thus be providing

I understand that it should say something like production is expected....blah blah blah!!!!

but i am confused between C and D here

Please explain with correct reasons

IMO D

A and E are out because of wrong usage of "which"
B and C sound like the production is expecting that it will double itself.

Hey Phil,

To compare C & D, use their split in simpler sentences. Which of the following is better?

C) Production is expected that it will double.
D) Production is expected to double.

(D) is better than C. Two ways to use expected.

In an active sentence, 'expected' can be followed with 'that + the subordinate clause'.
  • Correct: We expect that production will double.
However, in an active sentence 'expected' can also be followed with the infinitive.
  • Correct: We expect to double production.
In a passive sentence, 'expected' cannot be followed with 'that + subordinate clause'.
  • Incorrect: Production is expected that it will double.
  • Incorrect: We are expected that we double production.
  • Correct: Production is expected to double.

Yep, I agree. Please use underlining the post and future post from thereon.

Production is Expected to, Production is not a living thing that it can expect.
So narrowed down to A,D,E.

A\E has has basic mistake i.e which referring to year as which always refer to noun before it. Hence D should be answer.

Now coming to your doubt:

C. expected that it will almost double by the end of the year to provide: INCORRECT: 1st for meaning difference(as explained above) and 2nd "to provide" doesn't make any sense.

D. expected almost to double by the end of the year and thus to provide: CORRECT: bcoz of good parallelism i.e. "Expected to X and to Y"
