Guidance/ Suggestion required

by navi1784 » Fri Jul 22, 2016 12:25 pm
Dear All,

I need some guidance as I am quite confused and worried. Here is brief about my profile:

Age-32

GMAT- 650

Education- Master in Engineering from one of best college in India, 3.68/4 GPA, CFA charter holder, throughout excellent academic and scholarship. Gold medalist at undergrad level and even in school time.

Experience- Around 8 years in the investment domain, last 3 years in the renewable energy(solar), water, waste, sector. Now working with Chairman of the largest solar developer in India. So can say social development, impact on the society, etc.

Extra-curricular- Have worked with couple of NGOs, social and rural development, etc. Volunteer in college also and now as well.

Career focus- Entrepreneurship, have run a educational venture before

I want to get into one of the top 15 colleges, ideally like Stanford, HBS, Wharton, Kellog, MIT, INSEAD, etc. as I have strong focus to start my own venture post MBA and second at this stage probably MBA from Tier-2 college won't help much in my career.

Please suggest what are my chances at this GMAT score and profile.

Cheers

Hey dude,
Great to hear from you!
The short answer is:
Your profile is great!
But your GMAT is not!

You need a 720 MINIMUM to apply to the schools you mentioned. So my advice: Retake!!!

Here is an article which takes into consideration some of the factors: https://admissionado.com/mba/to-retake-o ... n=mba_blog

I hope this helps!
Best,
JF

Thanks JF for your response, really appreciate.

Happy to retake GMAT but then preparation and application writing by Sep'end deadline looks difficult. Would you advice me to retake and apply in round 2 (Jan) at these colleges or should I give GMAT now and apply in round 1 only.

Well if I go for round 2, in that case, I would like to understand if they take significant students from round 2 as well.

Thanks for your question. Let me give some background that may be helpful. The 650 GMAT profile and India and M7 schools are going to be truly a far far reach unless there is something extraordinary in your profile that is not showing up here. But I caution you against thinking that if you don't do M7 programs that you can't get great value from an MBA. I would suggest you look at top US programs in the 15-50 school range, from there narrow down to schools that have the environment you prefer (small or large class, rural or city, lots of experiential learning or not, concentrations in areas of interest etc). If you can narrow that way and look a little lower on the rankings, you may find a fit even with the score you have. Or also spend a bit more time to up that GMAT a bit if you truly have your sights set on M7.

Cheers

looks to me that your experience is strong, you acads are solid, but as noted, your GMAT kills you, especially as you are part of a super competitive profile.

If you can increase that GMAT with better preparation, then I think that makes best sense. If you can do this in time for Round 1, that is better still, as applying in Round 1, for you (competitive profile) will be helpful. If retaking the GMAT means Round 2, it will still be better if you can get that score up into the 720+ area.

cheers, alex

Thanks Alexbr.

If I target round 1 and retake GMAT around 20th Aug, preparing application in a month and achieving Sep last deadline would be very difficult, what you think?

I can apply in round 2 with better GMAT score and strong application.

Wondering is round 2 admission % and chances are much more lower, what say?

Cheers

Either way, an improved GMAT score will be important. Perhaps you can apply to 1-2 schools in round 1, and the remainder in round 2. cheers, Alex
