In the search for alien life, astronomers have recently begun studying a promising region, a solar system that is populated by a number of potentially life-friendly planets formed by fragments of an exploding star some 7 million years ago and features many of the geological and climatic prerequisites for the evolution of life.

A. features
B. featured
C. had featured
D. featuring
E. feature

OA D

Can someone explain why D is the correct answer and not A?
Vineesh,
Just telling you what I know and think. I am not the expert. :)

without second that it is not right
in D they make || past participle-formed and present participle-featuring that acts as adjective: solar system....formed by fragments....and featuring many of the......

I was confused btw B and D and went for D because the planet is "still featuring" - even today the stuff to support life..
First take: 640 (50M, 27V) - RC needs 300% improvement
Second take: coming soon..

"featuring" is a present participle and modifies "planets", parallel to "formed".

"features" would be a present-tense verb with the subject "solar system", and would be parallel to "is populated."
