So called green taxes, which exact a price for the use of polluting or non renewable fuels, are having a positive effect on the environment and natural resource base of countries as varied as China, the Netherlands and Hungary.

A) As varied as
B) As varied as are
C) As varied as those of
D) That are as varied as
E) That are varied as are

Please explain why incorrect answers do not work. OA after.

Intended meaning is to detail out 'countries' so A is correct.

Are/those of/ etc...not required

Can someone differentiate between A and D?
Is it down to concision?

Mitch, Is this question representative of modern GMAT?
AB both seem correct when it comes to ellipsis

The words in brackets are omitted, but their presence is understood.
Here, the countries in red are COMPARED to those in blue.
Not the intended meaning.
The intended meaning is that the countries in red INCLUDE the countries in blue.
Eliminate D.

OA: countries as varied as China, the Netherlands and Hungary
Here, the conveyed meaning is that the countries in red include DIFFERENT KINDS OF COUNTRIES (such as the countries in blue).

I thing a is correct because it is more consice. d is more wordy.
there is not meaning difference between d and a.
