The price of the article is greater now than in 2009.

Is greater correct? I am wondering because normally, greater (or lesser) is used to express a comparison between two different things.

I think it should be..
The price of the article is increased now than it was in 2009...
Use increased when the value of the same quantity changes over time..
Use greater than when you are comparing two different entities !!

Greater is correct. The price now and the price two years ago are two different things (even when it is the price of the same thing). That is to say, "Price of item X now" and "Price of item X in 2009" are considered different things.
