GRE replacement for low GMAT quant score

I took the GMAT and GRE awhile back and botched the quant section on the GMAT pretty hard (79%). I received a 710 on the GMAT due to a 95% in verbal. I took the GRE a couple days later just as a major fallback and got 800 on the quant and some horrific score on the verbal (50-60%).

I am looking to go to a top 25 school in CA and I would prefer the GMAT to be one of my stronger points. Should I retake the GMAT and try to get my quant up or will the 800 on the GRE suffice and show that I can actually preform quant at a respectable level? Also, since I didn't study or know what would be on the GRE verbal I did very badly, can I just show my quant to schools since I did very poorly on the GRE verbal?

Hi and thanks for your question. You are not looking at too many schools in the top 25 in California (prob. UCLA, USC, Cal, and Stanford) so the real question is: which of those do you really want? They are all great programs but differ significantly. Very quickly (and very incompletely: this is just to give you a sense):

Cal: Small, Bay Area, entrepeneurship focus, green, progressive
Stanford: Small, tech oriented, insanely difficult to get into, many alums stay in California
UCLA: Bigger than Cal and Stanford, in LA proper, entrepeneurship and finance are strengths, has national reputation along w/ Stanford
USC: Also in LA, probably weakest national reputation,

One could go on...

A 710 is a very solid score but if you are going for Stanford then it would help you to nudge it up a bit. For the other three, a 710 should be fine.

Now, the other factor as I love to point is that quite apart from getting in there is the challenge of paying for it all. A 710 might get you closer to "free money" in the form of grants, scholarships, etc., at USC than at some of the other places.
