Hi guys

Stuck with this DS.

first i thought i didn't understand the question clearly. but after rereading i came up with the following explanation. Will appreciate if you let me know where i am going wrong in my approach.


We do not know the actual number of people in group. Lets say if 10 is the number of people in group then asked is the avg of n people (1<=n<10> n/3 =1 => tallest person height is given. And total avg of group is given => we can get height of remaining 9 members. But qn asked is to calculate avg of n i.e 3 people here..which 3 people? First 3 or second 3..so on till last 3? or any 3 people in 10 group.

That is why i marked E..

but OA is A. how is statement 1 suff??

I am not sure with my understanding the language of the question, but statement (1) ends by stating that the average height of the group is 5 feet and 10 inches. What does that mean? Isn't itself telling the answer.

But I feel, GMAT question is not that much simple, I must messed up somewhere with the language. Hell, GMAT people ask to make concise and clear sentences in SC, can't they itself be clear enough in the question...... :twisted:

the way you interpreted makes the qn much simpler..infact its not even a qn if you were assumption were to be true..coz the answer is already stated in (1)..

did you read my explanation?

i think the qn says that there is a group with N number of people and out of those N, the avg height of some n people is asked.

you have assumed N = n but its not..

n is NOT the total number of people in the group.

now you may want to give this qn a try again :)

neo : i noticed the horizontal scroll bar in the pic posted by you. i feel there are few words missing in statement 1. It should have been.

1) The average heigh of the n/3 tallest people in the group is 6 feet 2.5 inches, and the average height of the rest of the people in the group is 5 feet 10 inches.

now it should be possible.

how did i overlook scrolling the horizontal bar during my GPREP exam??

obviously now the question is a peanut to crack..

2/3(6.xx) + 1/3(5.xx)

so (1) will be the answer..

damn..i missed my 51 in quant :(
