Got a 740- should I retake?

So here's my story. I targeted and scheduled Sep 20 as the date when I thought I would be ready to take the GMAT, but then scheduled Aug 20 as well to kind of get a feel of how it would be and give myself two tries at it. So I took it yesterday and was somewhat surprised to see that I got a 740 (49Q,41V). I'm wondering, should I sit for the Sep 20 date now? Or stand on 740?

Target School: Stanford
Background: 4 years at a regional CPA firm, CPA license, some but not a lot nor very high quality extracurriculars. 3.7 undergrad from USC.

Arguments for:
-I could get a higher score and use that to offset other weaknesses in my resume- which might be necessary given that it's Stanford
-I already paid for it

Arguments against:
-740 is higher than the Stanford mean and is pretty favorably situated in the mid 80%
-I could get a lower score... I know people say they only look at your highest, but it probably doesn't look good to have a downward trend, right?
-Continuing to study will take time away from writing essays and helping the people writing my letters of reference
-I can get $80 back by canceling

Thanks in advance to the many people offering excellent advice on this site

Congrats on your great score! In my opinion, 740 in 1st attempt itself makes you a competitive candidate for the school of your choice. If you can improve your score by 30 more points, I would say go ahead. If not, I would suggest you to spend time on essays and other application processes. As the schools too prefers you to apply in Round 1, I guess you have sufficient time to complete your application. If you plan to take second attempt ,you might have to rush for Round 1 deadlines.
Listen to your gut feeling, and act accordingly. All the best for your final decision.

If your intention is to apply R1 (which it should be) I would stand on your score. I can;t tell you how many times I've seen people with a nice high score like yours try a second time when it wasn't necessary, and get lower. You got your score, now it's time to go for the gold! Spend your time making your application ROCK, that's what'll get you in.

Thanks for the advice guys. I definitely do want to do R1, so I guess I'll work on my essays. Would it mean anything to pick up an extra 20-30 pts?

No, 740 is good enough. Concentrate on your essays; Stanford application is pretty time consuming.

While a 770-780 might have the 'extraordinarily good' shine to it, a) There is no guarantee you will get that and b) It will take a big effort to increase your score to that level. My advice would be to put your effort in other parts of the application at this time.

Hi rurabe,

Congratulations on an excellent GMAT score. I recommend that you do not take the test again. With your score of 740, an extra 20-30 points will not make much of a difference. Your time should be spent on your personal essays and other areas of your application.

Here is some advice for Stanford Business School:
