good overall score with AWA 3.0

I did pretty well on my overall GMAT score which is 730, but
I pretty much bomb on AWA with 3.0

Should I retake the exam to boost my AWA score or provide an optional essay
to the school?

730 on the GMAT is a really good score but 3.0 on AWA is very low. If you have a good Verbal score on GMAT and write amazing essays with an additional essay on your writing skills, you can take care of the low AWA score. To be on a safe side, it is best if you can retake the GMAT.
