You can use 'this' as an adjective, but not as a pronoun standing on its own, trying to refer to an entire clause.

For example, on the SC, the following would be incorrect:

I like apples, and this is why I eat them every day.

But 'this' used as a pronoun is not really tested. You have to look out for 'that' used to refer to an entire clause.

For example:

Incorrect: "I read every day, and that helps me maintain my linguistic skills."
Correct: "Reading every day helps me maintain..."
