Great question and i guess it cleared my basics a little bit. They are trying to "eradicate or control" only the two more infections , measles and yaws which are like smallpox. Also "what they had not previously considered possible because" is a misplaced modifier which should have been after "better control".

Is it the same to use 'X such as Y' and 'such X as Y'.

1) Scientists want to pursue eradication of infections such as measles and yaws.

There can be many more infections scientists want to eradicate and two of them are M & Y

2) Scientists want to pursue eradication of such infections as measeles and yaws.

The scope is limited to M & Y of such infections.

--Correct me if i am wrong.

As per my understanding "had" is used when there is one more past event...

But I think that there is no past event here....

Can someone please tell what I am missing here.

Maybe someone can explain it better but I saw it as...

Start of Program[past] ---> results[present/ongoing]

So, before the program started[past] scientists had thought it wasn't possible...

Choose C

Hope that Helps!

Look at the answers there is a 2/3 split
such as vs like

the correct one here is such as ....so B and E out

That leaves A , C and D

D is awkward , A and c are left

In A , the, is awkward , hence C

"considered" and "stimulated" are two events of which "considered" occurred first and hence had is used !!!

Hi ghacker,

Can you please tell why using "the" is wrong in A.

Thanks
Mohit

Hi montz,

when giving example using such as we cannot use "the"......

There is some grammar rule for the same......i.e. "the" refers to entire class of the infections or it refers to something which we have already mentioned......both of which is not the case here....there is a post of Ron which details this grammar rule of using "the" + such as....but I do am not able to find that link as of now.

A is wrong for one more reason....it says "other"...which is not required.....we need only infections such as or such infections as(both are same as per Manhattan)

Please let me know in case you find something more to this.....
