Keep factoring out 2's until you see a pattern:

2+2+2^2+2^3+...+2^8
2(1+1+2+2^2+2^3+...+2^7)
2*2(1+1+2+2^2+2^3+...+2^6)

...

2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2

=2^9
