a certain store sells chairs individually or in sets of 6. the store charges less for purchasing a set of 6 chairs than for purchasing 6 chairs individually. how much does the store charge for purchasing a set of 6 chairs?

(1) the charge for purchasing a set of 6 chairs is 10% less than the charge for purchasing the 6 chairs individually.

(2) the charge for purchasing a set of 6 chairs is $20 more than the charge for purchasing 5 chairs individually.

IMO- C.

how would you solve this?

Yup answer should be C

You have 2 unknown variables so you need 2 distinct equations to solve them.

St 1 and St 2 individually provide 1 distinct equation. So when you combine them you'll get two distinct equations. Answer should be C.

I do not know for sure what's the OA. I received this file from random browsing on beatthegmat. That's why making it sure, I get the correct answer.

OA means Official Answer. The answer which is given in the book. Also use the spoiler function to mention the answer. The function is in the reply toolbar. it is one of the button. It helps to hide an answer so that all can solve the question.

I know OA stands for official answer. I said, I do not know what is the official answer of this exact problem because I got this file from random browsing. I am trying to check the correct answer for this question. Hope I make it clear.

Let CP be the collective price of 6
Let IP be the individual price of each chair

StmtI

CP = 6 * IP - 10/100*6*IP
= 5.4 * IP

insuff since we just have a relationship between CP and IP

Stmt II

5* IP = CP + 20

5 IP -20 = CP

CP = 5 ( IP - 4)

2 variables one equation or another way to look at is for different values of IP the CP could take on many different values

INSUFF

From 1) and 2)

CP = 5.4 * IP
CP = 5 ( IP - 4)

Equate both to obtain IP and then CP.

SUFF
