Hey,

does anyone know if gmatfocus diagnostic tests..are pool of new questions...or mostly repeat from OG's?

Sorry, but I've never heard of gmatfocus. It's better to stick with well known cat providers.

GMATFocus is from the best-known CAT-provider in the market- GMAC itself. It's a legit product, and does not contain questions from the OG. The questions in GMATFocus are retired, real GMAT questions. I don't think they are published elsewhere, but I've never checked for overlap with the paper tests. Do read reviews of GMATFocus before purchasing- some people don't think it's worth the money. I think it's a good product, but only for people who are near the end of their study, and who have exhausted other good question sources. Before then, I think there are better questions to work on.

According to GMAC, GMAT Focus uses questions that have not been published elsewhere (in OG, etc.). So it does represent a new source of questions (quant, anyway).

What a great tool!

You can choose either to complete the test TIMED or NOT TIMED and it gives you 24 questions and 46 minutes. Like Manhattan GMAT, GMAT gives you a detailed analysis of your performance, your timing and your weak and strong areas.

I highly recommend it!

Best 25 dollars ever spent!

The website says that after 4 retakes of the GMATFocus exam you may see repeats.

How many times can I take the GMAT Focus™ Exam?
There is no limit to the number of exams you can purchase. However if you take the Quantitative exam more than four times you may see questions repeated.

Also, FYI, with the release of OG12, there is now some overlap with GMAT Focus. So if you've done GMAT Focus, you may recognize some OG12 questions or vice versa.

I had ordered the 3 set GMATFocus tests and yesterday i took the first test of the set. Here are my thoughts:

The first thing that comes to my mind is that it was tougher than the GMATPrep, and definitely tougher than most problems in OG11. Some of the problems that i encountered yesterday needed a lot of calculations. GMAT questions are supposed to be solved in less than 3 steps, but the answer explanations of some of the questions in GMATFocus involved 5 to 10 steps. For eg. one problem required to form 2 different equations, then apply a condition to one and then solve the equations to get the value for a variable and then substitute that in the eqn. to get the other value. It was easy but took me almost 160-180 secs. I got a question on Permutation and i had not reviewed this section at all.

The result is presented in a detailed fashion showing you your estimated scaled GMAT quant score, section-wise and topic-wise strike rate, time taken to solve right answers and wrong answers, number of them guessed etc etc. What i didn't like was their overall scaled score prediction. They predicted my score to be within 40 - 47 with 80% confidence. Well, i guess after completing all the three tests may be i'll get some insight to where i stand!!!

So overall the experience was good, and it was a very good practice of some new questions.

Verdict - Recommended.

I agree that the questions are very good practice. I haven't heard a rule that GMAT problems are supposed to be able to be done in fewer than 3 steps (or even 3 steps or fewer) - many problems do have an "elegant" solution that doesn't have many steps, but not all of them.

Also, GMAC is in the business of giving the test, but it is not in the business of helping us get better at taking the test. Many times, the official solutions are not the best possible solutions. That's what separates the good test-takers from the great ones - figuring out those "best" solutions yourself.
