MGMAT CAT 3---Geologists

by prachich1987 » Wed Jan 12, 2011 8:55 am
Geologists once thought that the molten rock known as lava was an underground remnant of Earth's earliest days, sporadically erupting through volcanoes, but they now know that it is continuously created by the heat of the radioactivity deep inside the planet.

A) was an underground remnant of Earth's earliest days, sporadically erupting
B) had been an underground remnant of Earth's earliest days and sporadically erupted
C) was an underground remnant of Earth's earliest days, which sporadically erupted
D) would be an underground remnant of Earth's earliest days that sporadically erupted
E) was an underground remnant of Earth's earliest days, having sporadically erupted

OA : after some time

The noun phrase "underground remnant of Earth's earliest days" is modified by which, this also correct the parallel error ... so I think 'C' is the answer .

between a and c
i would pick c

a is wrong because of sporadically erupting. the action in continuous tense.
Cheers !!

But it is not 100% clear what is modified! which can refer to remnant but the word can also refer to days.

I don't understand what's wrong with using conditional verb here

We use the conditional tense (could, would, might, etc.) to discuss an action that might occur in the future. The geologists in the past as the ones thinking about the lava so it might help to think of the sentence from their perspective. If we use the conditional form, we have the following meaning:

In the past, these geologists thought that lava would eventually become a remnant, at some point in the future.

But this doesn't make sense, because the geologists were looking at lava and trying to determine its origins (not its future origins - something that actually wouldn't make sense - how can something have future origins??).

It might also help to think about a sentence where "would" would make sense.

Environmentalists once thought that the Alpha bird would be extinct by the turn of the century, but a recent spotting in the Beta mountains shows that the rare bird still thrives there.

Notice that the environmentalists were making a prediction (even if they were in the past).

Hope this helps!
